What's happening at the Blaauwklippen Family Market this October
September 28, 2017
Follow the shady avenue of trees to the Blaauwklippen Family Market for Spring has arrived in all its luscious yet gentle green splendour. The vineyards are displaying an attire of mint green young leaves which shimmer with dew in the early morning rays of a rising sun.
The farmyard is abuzz with activity for, down at the Manor House, a new family is putting down roots. A little family of Mama Goose and Dada Goose and their brood of eight little goslings wander around on the lawns. When it is time for more excitement, they set off for the pond amongst the trees for a swimming and foraging lesson or two.
1 OCTOBER – ANTIQUE FAIR
A visit to this market is simply something not to be missed! Not only are we happy to welcome the Antique Fair but we also have one of our favourite artists performing.
You will find our Antique Dealers in the Carriage Museum where they will not only have their collections of interesting antiques on display but will be happy to share their expertise with you. Pop in and meet these interesting people; admire their ware and share some interesting yarns.
While you are browsing amongst the numerous stalls, or enjoying the gentle, warm sunshine on the lawns, you will be entertained by songstress, Lize Mynhard! Lize has become known for her soothing voice, yet her selection of songs is vibrant, making for a lively atmosphere at the market.
You will find some interesting stalls scattered around the market venue. Look for the trader with his beautiful jewellery – inspired by the sea. There is a stall with soft leather shoes in the most beautiful colours as well as one where you can buy some fresh flowers. Some unusual dresses and pants; stylish sunglasses – the choice is yours.
A visit to the "Market Deli" is a must! You will be able to find cheese, olives, cured sausages, fresh veggies, biltong and more!
Whether relaxing on the lawn or in the shade of the old fig trees, you will be entertained by Guy Feldman. This guy has a repertoire of popular music from the 60s right through to the 90s and with 35 years’ experience you can just imagine how good he is.
Maybe it is time to start looking for some Christmas gifts? You will be sure to find something amongst the numerous stalls at the market! There are beautifully crafted cement containers and decorative objects; cunningly printed baby ware; soap and beauty products and delightful hats. In the old Wine Centre, you will be able to pick and choose from flavoured salt, olives and jams; some exotic tea and cheese to spruce up a salad or pasta.
On the third Sunday of each month, furry friends of all shapes and sizes come to support the Vineyard Doggy Walk.
15 OCTOBER – DOGGY WALK
It’s time for the early birds to take to the vineyards with their pooches again. The third Sunday of every month is most certainly one of our favourite days. From afar you can hear the excited yelps of the dogs as they wander amongst the vineyards where they meet friends and sniff out curious whiffs of wild creatures. This excitement is of course all in aid of the Helderberg AWS for your fee of R20 is in support of this charity.
While you relax in the shade of the old, old wild fig trees, you can enjoy the music provided by Ricky Nass. He performs popular hits from the 80s and 90s with a soothing bluesy undertone – so if this is your cup of tea, be there!
As soon as you start feeling peckish, browse around and be adventurous. Try out some of the Mediterranean fair on offer at the market. Traders have Greek, Cyprian and delicacies from Crete on offer. Have some iced tea, a delicious fresh juice or a cocktail to wash all this down.
The learners of Young Entrepreneurs joined us for the first time last month
This is a very special Sunday for we will have a group of very young and enthusiastic entrepreneurs visiting the market.
These young entrepreneurs follow the 13 week On-Your-Marks programme that goes through the steps of product research, production, costing and marketing. The Young Entrepreneurs programme is a national franchise which has secured funding to sponsor the Grade 4-7 students at Klapmuts Primary School. The programme culminates in a Market Day where the new entrepreneurs are given the opportunity to hand out their business cards and sell some products. Here at the market, the students are given the opportunity to sell their products.
Remember that there is always a large variety of food to choose from at the market as well as fresh and healthy juices; cocktails and wine from the Blaauwklippen Estate cellars.
While you are enjoying the company of friends and family, Newton Theron will be entertaining you. Our “bearded musician” is such a favourite with our visitors who often join in.
The market has a variety of fun activities for children of all ages.
At Blaauwklippen Family Market we have numerous activities in a safe environment for the little ones to keep them occupied while parents relax close-by on the lawns. There are pony rides, zorb balls, a soccer wall and bunji ropes as well as a stall where they can be creative and produce sand art pictures.
We welcome back G-Man & the Gingers to the market. They are a funky acoustic folk, blues, country and reggae act which will entertain us all with some fresh sounds. Come and enjoy some sublime interpretations of classics from Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Leonard Cohen and Tom Petty to some modern hits from Avicci and Mumford & Sons.
Just a friendly reminder that no private picnics are allowed on the Blaauwklippen Wine Estate. You are, however, more than welcome to bring your own chairs or a picnic blanket along when visiting the Blaauwklippen Family Market.
