With the bit of rain that we received during April, the winelands of Stellenbosch are once more looking beautiful. An autumn bouquet of red, brown and gold in the vineyard blends with the lush greens of the winter's grass which await you and make for a pleasant drive out to the market.
We have our customary Antique Fair and Vineyard Doggy Walk planned for this month but we also have a special musician lined up for Mother’s Day as well as a new event in a trail run for a good cause.
We are happy to welcome Gipsy Jazz duo, Dirkie and Talisa back from their travels to other festivals during the past two months.
Since its inception, the Antique Fair at the market has grown from strength to strength especially over the past year. The organiser of the fair has informed us that she will fill the entire Carriage Museum with an assortment of antiques, collectibles, ceramics and other interesting odds and ends.
Although every day should be Mother’s Day, the powers that be have decided that this day needs to be extra special. Come treat your mother at the market to a delicious lunch from one of our food traders. Perhaps a bottle of the Blaauwklippen MCC, the Diva, would make her feel extra special. If you haven’t found her anything yet, then the crafters at the market will be more than willing to assist you in finding that special something for the special lady in your life.
As a special treat to all the mothers, we asked crooner, Harry Curtis, to perform on the day.
Our friends at the Helderberg Animal Welfare Society aredelicious back for another barking mad day of fun at our monthly Vineyard Doggy Walk FUNdraiser. The walk starts at 10h00 and takes you and your furry friend on a scenic stroll through the beautiful vineyards of Blaauwklippen. Entry to the walk is R20 per person and dog. As the nights are cooler, we would like to ask you to bring any blankets to the market so that the animals at the shelter can enjoy a cozy winter.
We are also welcoming the good people of the One Heart Foundation to the market for an early morning trail run. This programme aims to equip children and youth through the provision of fun, interactive, tested curriculum; after school activities such as trail running, leadership development, and peer to peer learning. The programme also provides mentorship and coaching for at-risk youth.
In South Africa trail running provides many opportunities for adults but rarely caters for kids. One Heart develops kids in trail running and instils a love for sport and for the environment. In today’s society children are introduced to running in a very competitive manner. If a learner is not the best in his or her school, he or she is often not motivated to participate. Our aim is to see our children and youth discover the joy of running at grassroots level.
Their purpose is to inspire every young person to believe that he or she can conquer any trial: to help them realise that it’s not about performance, but about enjoying the sport as well as owning a healthy body and a sound mind - mens sana in corpore sano.
Proceeds from our trail running events go for internationally renowned, CAPS aligned, SA Department of Education endorsed Key Links curriculum for SA schools. One Heart children can discover for themselves the beauty and excitement of running, reading and leading.
For more information on the run, please visit the run’s event Page on Facebook.
Newton Theron will be contributing to the festive atmosphere on the day with his rendition of popular hits from the early 2000s till more current ones.
We hosted our first “Open Mic” session with great success. We asked the public to vote for the musician whom they would like to see perform at the market. All the performers were most enthusiastic thus we will more than likely ask them to perform at the market during the course of the year. Voting was a closely contested between The Riddle and Gerhard Geldenhuys. Gerhard won by seven votes and will be performing on this day.
We finish the five Sunday month with entertainment by a market regular, Stuart. During his previous performance at the market in April, the crowd could not get enough of him and calls of “Encore!” were heard at 15h00.
By this time, many of our traders would be offering their winter menu items such as soup, gluwhein and hot cocktails. Great to keep you warm on a winter day.
