The market is known for its mouth-watering variety of food.
Here are some lunch ideas to share with your loved one this Sunday at the market.
Create your own picnic:
The market has a variety of quality small producers. Why not bring a basket and create your own picnic from our producers? We suggest that you fill your basket with a freshly baked ciabatta, delicious olives, mature cheese, spicy and smoky cured sausages, biltong, creamy pâtés and juicy, sun-kissed grapes. Find a shady spot under the trees and just enjoy the company of your significant other.
For those of you who are looking for something with a bit more crunch and an authentic taste, we suggest that you create a platter filled with spicy samosas, Belgian Croquettes, Dim Sum, a Thai spring roll. If you wish to heat things up, add a chilli popper or two!
If you who are looking for something with more substance but still wish to share your food with your other half, we are happy to suggest the following: The famous Mexican basket is the perfect way to start your lunch off with. How hot you would like it to be, is entirely up to you. A traditional Flammkuchen or “Tarte Flambé”, either vegetarian or with lashings of bacon, is the perfect meal to be shared by star-crossed lovers. If you are in the mood for something more traditionally South African, we suggest that you order a generous helping of “potjiekos” from “Die Rooi Olyf” or perhaps a plate of succulent lamb on the spit and a generous helping of crisp salad from “Mr Spitbraai” will be more to your liking. Early morning the aroma of bacon and eggs will fill the air when Savant will be preparing their breakfast rolls and for lunch they offer their delicious gourmet burgers for lunch.
The Greeks will as always be at their stall with their traditional gyros. We do however suggest that you order one of their tasty and truly Greek platters to share.
We are happy to be able to cater for those of you who follow the Low-Carb High Fat diet as well. The small producer’s section is filled with numerous options such as cured sausages, olives, biltong and cheese to create your own Banting platter. Koen of Mr Spitbraai will also be able to assist you with a succulent slice of lamb from the spit and fresh Greek salad.
For dessert we have some natural ice cream and sorbet from Cold Gold. Banters are in for a treat as they have some extra creamy banting ice cream ready to be enjoyed. Sweet Cilla’s will have a selection of delicious cupcakes, a decadent chocolate cake and even a cheese cake to satisfy the sweet cravings. Last but most certainly least, Catje’s pancakes are ready to treat you to fresh pancakes. The biltong and cream cheese or Nutella-filled pancake will definitely fill your heart with love.
The market has a notable selection of refreshments to wash the delicious food down. Let’s start with the most obvious…the excellent wine of Blaauwklippen. For those of you looking for something with fizz we suggest the Zinfandel-inspired “Ons Sprankel” or their very own MCC, the Diva. Pay a visit to Christo, our resident cocktail guy and be charmed by what he has to offer. He will be making a rose geranium cocktail with Blaauwklippen’s very own estate gin, Triple Three. If strawberry daiquiris or mojitos are more to your liking, make a note and visit the ladies of Crafty Cocktails. Die Biervrou will be serving up ice cold refreshing craft beer all day. If you are more health conscious, visit Dr Juice for one of his legendary, freshly made the spot fruit juices.
